Tattoo Wars - Episode 1 Recap

October 25, 2007 |

Another week, and yet another tattoo show to recap. It is starting to get a bit crowded in the reality ink space these days,tattoowars1.gif and we for one, don’t mind. But don’t worry, we don’t have another cast and city with the same Miami Ink forumula to follow. Instead, we have Tattoo Wars, which recently premiered on TLC and has another episode on tonight at 8pm.

Here is the premise of the show….

Tattoo Wars pits the best tattoo artists of our time against each other in a head to head creation competition. In each episode we explore the world, legend and work of two internationally acclaimed tattooists. Then we travel to a huge tattoo expo where our stars, in three hours time, ink a tattoo on the skin of two willing clients. These creations have a common theme, such as a dragon, a calla lily, a sailor, a tribal gauntlet, or a hanya (Japanese devil mask) but are rendered in the unique style of each artist. As the show closes, thousands of show attendees vote for the creation they like the best and the winning artist takes home the Tattoo Wars trophy.

Another great ink blog, Tattoo Johnny recently did a full on recap of this first episode, and we have the video of the episode for you below as well.

Episode 1 pits Mike Rubendall, from the East, vs. Pascal “Bugs” Jarrion, from the West.

Check it out below.

I wish ‘successful seasons’ to the cast &crew of all the tattoo reality shows; I also watch “Tattoo Wars” and it’s nice to see tattooists compete. I also like seeing tattooists work together as friends/co workers within niches i.e. “Miami Ink”, “L.A. Ink”, “London Ink” – a kind of “Ink” Trilogy. Anyways, I wish them luck (e.g. Kat Von D) with working in the media spot light and with public scrutiny (re: Frank Lero Tattoo Mistake). Anyways, next week it’s November and the Season Premiere of “Miami Ink” finally comes to TLC. Hooray!!! Ami James said a few words about the show during a ‘recent’ telephone interview with Radin Sri Ghazali of The New Straits Times Online (09/30/2007). In the e-article called “Tattoo power”, he talks about viewers learning more about the Miami tattoo pack. I know that Ami has chatted with the media a couple of times; On 02/04/2007, Craig Ferguson was tattooed at “Miami Ink”. And, on 02/24/2007, Ami James was a guest on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. So far, the spinoff – “LA Ink” has done quite well. And, I think this is partly due to the numerous ads that promoted “LA Ink”/Kat Von D; especially the many many commercials that were broadcasted during episodes of “Miami Ink” weeks before the series premiered.

I had watched the episode of tattoo wars with Mike vs Bugs. I really liked the tattoo of Bugs Hanya Mask. I have been trying to find a picture of the Hanya Mask that Bugs had created and can not seem to find it no where. Can anyone help out or email me the picture of the tattoo that Bugs did on that episode.
    Thanks
