This week Miami Ink returned to TLC for another season and things picked where they left off for the crew. If there is one
thing you can expect from this show it is consistency, I felt like I was watching an episode from really any season while I was tuned in. Ami, Garver, Nunez and Darren do their thing, the people talk about why they want the art, an occasional side story plays out, usually to little hype, and thats it.
And I gotta tell ya, that is what I prefer for the most part. Here are some thoughts on the art on this episode…..
- Stan Gets a Fat Girl Pinup Tattoo from Darren -
I’m not gonna hate on the fat fetish thing or anything, but does this guy know it is there forever now? Ok, just kidding, I am sure he does. This piece not only does nothing for me as an idea but I don’t really think alot of Darren’s work either on it, just an opinion of course, as always.
- Diedre Gets A Fat Girl Pinup Tattoo - A different pinup but another of a fat chick, this time for a fat chick that apparently is “well known” in the world of fat chicks. Yeah, I cannot get into this, just another average looking piece, regardless of what it is.
- Simone gets a Peacock Tattoo from Garver - This was by far the best piece on the episode and yet another reason why Chris Garver is the best artist in the shop and possibly on any of these reality tattoo shows. The intricate detail, color and shading make this a long difficult piece, but an unreal result. Love this one.
- Ashley Gets A Praying Angel Piece by Ami - Nice work by Ami, but I am not too overly impressed here. Maybe it is the lack of originality or just the fact that angel tattoos don’t do a whole lot for me. Ashley says it is looking over her shoulder, how cute.
- Maggie gets a Blue Heron from Nunez - Nunez totally changes the idea for this piece and I am kinda surprised at how fast Maggie agrees to the new heron he sketches. Overall it is a nice piece, but I sorta liked her original idea more, did you?
- Jorge gets a Hula Girl Tattoo from Garver - Garver nails it again with this piece. Jorge lets him do his thing creatively, which lets Garver go to town.
- Mark gets a Fish piece on his back - The whole fish that changes sexes thing fits Mark well, he used to be a chick and now is a very hairy chick that is one step from being a dude. This sorta freaks Ami out a bit but once Ami hears he feels better being a dude, and that he now has “direction”, Ami starts to like the guy person. Not much of a piece, pretty obvious that this one made air because of the story, not the art.
Garver saves the episode overall, because his peacock piece was amazing mostly. Yoji and his band and their sidestory was mildly annoying. Their song was heavily annoying. What did you think?
Comments
I agree with your assessments of the artwork. Garver is a master at what he does, and my favorite of the boys all around. I did, however, like Nunez’ idea for the blue heron tattoo- thought the wrap-around idea wouldn’t have worked as well as his did. Thew whole design wouldn’t have shown all at once done the original way, a design element I personally don’t care for in some cases.( Sometimes it works, though, as in Garver’s peacock.)
As far as Yoji’s band and “song”…each to his own, but I thought it was horrible! He has talent as a guitar player, but niether he nor his friend have any talent whatsoever as far as singing goes. (Loved Ami’s tongue-in-cheek comment to that caller about listening to Celine Dion, though! )
RJ, totally agree about Yoji, did’nt I say that? Horrible song and getting a college radio spin is well, a big who cares….
Not in to the fat chick stuff but hey…to each their own. I would say that if you have to keep telling people you’re “well known” chances are you’re not.
Yes, “admin”, I took your comments about Yoji’s “music” to be in the same vein as mine.
Sorry if you thought I was implying differently.
Some of the backstories help the viewers as well as the reality T.V. personalities define what their persona is all about; For example, is Yoji a tattooist that plays in a punk rock band called Big Deal? Or is Yoji a singer that tattoos at Miami Ink/Love Hate Tattoo? Personally, I currently think of Yoji as more of a guitar player, apprentice, dad, husband… Anyways, there is an e-article about Yoji called “‘Inside the ink world’ by Diana Doyle” a.k.a. “Reality show ‘Miami Ink’ makes ‘Yoji’ Harada a celebrity”; His wife Bridget also says a few words in the e-article.
I also prefer the original ‘heron’ design provided by Maggie. I would love to get a copy of the original somehow. Anyone know where I can get it?
i want the tattoo Ami did on ashley (thye guardian angel)
i cant find the design anywhere any suggestions???
